Solar
Radiation Temperature Study
***Windshield temperatures were measured with a Raytek
Infrared Gun
In
the summer, most of the heat gained through glass results from solar radiation
or sunlight. Direct solar radiation
results from sunlight hitting the glass.
In clear glass
approximately 8 percent of the energy is reflected back outdoors.
A portion is absorbed by the glass and the remainder passes directly
inside the vehicle. When this takes
place, radiation heats up the dash, steering wheel, seats, etc.
At this point, the heat is trapped and can not pass back through the
glass efficiently. Below are the
results of our testing. This is
known as the “Greenhouse Effect”.
